Jazz up your rice – 3 Easy & Delicious Ways To Cook Rice

Rice is really adaptable and can be made delicious.  But, how often do we just boil it?  This got me thinking, how I could jazz up my rice without too much additional work.  Therefore, in this post I share with you my 3 easy and delicious ways to cook rice.  So, if you think your rice could do with a lift read on…

Cumin rice is so easy and with just a bit of lemon juice and some roasted cuminseeds it makes a lovely accompaniment to curries. Lemon Pepper rice has the spiciness of pepper with lemon and is delicious with vegetables like asparagus.

And finally, Nasi Kuning (recipe inspired by Daily Cooking Quest), which is an Indonesian favourite of mine containing  a dreamy combination of lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, turmeric and coconut.

All of these recipes feature simple ingredients, and are quick and easy – let’s make boiled rice tasty!!

Prep time: 2 minutes
Cooking time: 25 – 30 minutes
(Each recipe – serves 4)

Cumin Rice


370g (13 oz) rice
700ml (24 fl oz) water
1 onion finely chopped
4 cloves garlic finely chopped
2 tsp cumin seeds
1 cinnamon stick
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
6 cardamom pods
Salt & pepper
Zest of one lemon
Chopped fresh coriander to serve


  1. In a pot on medium heat roast cumin, mustard seeds, cardamom and cinnamon stick fragrant, take care not to burn.
  2. Add rice, water, onion, garlic and cook until rice is fluffy (about 25 minutes)
  3. Add lemon zest and chopped coriander and mix through the rice prior to serving

Lemon Rice


370g (13 oz) rice
700ml (24 fl oz) water
Zest of 2 Lemons
3 tsp fresh ground black pepper
2 tsp Onion powder
2 tbsp Tamari or soysauce
1 Lemon juice


  1. Add rice, water, onion powder, ground pepper, lemon zest and cook until rice is fluffy (about 25 minutes)
  2. Add lemon juice and tamari and mix through prior to serving

Ingredients – Nasi Kuning (Turmeric Rice)*

370g (13 oz) rice
700ml (24 fl oz) water
100ml coconut milk
1 kaffir lime leaf
1 stick of lemon grass
1 bay leaf
2 tsp turmeric powder
Salt to taste
